The family came from Lampertsloch, District of Woerth, Alsace-Lorraine, which is located north of Strassbourg, France. All the children were born in Alsace except the last one which was born at sea. They came on the ship "Probus" in 1844, leaving Antwerp on December 6th 1944 and landed at Galveston in January of 1845. They shuttled from Galveston to Indianola and traveled by ox-cart to San Antonio where they waited until September for the arrival of Castro.

This group of settlers were led by Rev. Gergory Pfanner, a Catholic priest adventurer. On the same ship were Salome's brother, Francis J. Forst and his wife and two daughters, and her sister, Frances, who later married George Mangold. The Forsts and Mangolds were from Kurtzenhausen, District of Woerth, not far from Lampertsloch.

The Christilles family received their grant on the Franciso Perez Creek, southwest of Castroville. Joseph Christilles, the 75 year old father of Pierre, also came along. [handwritten addition: Each male was granted 100 ? of land and one lot in Castroville. This property was granted to settlers by the Republic of Texas.]

The Christilles Family lived in the Francisco Perez Creek area, southwest of Castroville. The people of this small community engaged a teacher for their children. His name was Mr. Mulkey, in German it was von Moltke. Mr. Mulkey lived with the Christilles family. The boys slept in the attic with Mr. Mulkey and all but George Jr. contracted tuberculosis from him.

Jospeh Bader, Jr. came to Castroville as a young man of 11 years, with his father and sister, Mary Ann, from Witt-lesheim, Alsace-Lorraine in 1844. His mother, sister (Theresa), and brother (Sebastian) immigrated a year later.

Catherine Haby, Josephine's mother, boarded the ship to America as a widow with 3 children. She traveled by ship with the Gizelle family. She was pregnant and lost her baby girl at sea. She died of grief once she got to America and was buried at Indianola, TX. The orphaned children, Josephine and her two brothers, went to the Haby relatives but they couldn’t take care of them so a Mexican family took them in. The boys were raised by the Mexicans, but a Rev. Dubuis saw Josephine with a Mexican family and thought she should be in town so he took her in as his housekeeper. As soon as she was old enough he married her off to Joe Bader.

Her first husband, Joe Bader, was an older man who was rough around the edges. He was shot off his horse and killed by another settler in a disagreement. Her 2^nd husband was George Christilles Sr. She had two children with her first husband and then had nine more with George. They lived on a ranch. George Christilles Jr. was Faustina’s great-grandpa.
