     The family came from Lampertsloch, District of Woerth, Alsace-Lorraine, which is located north of Strassbourg, France. All the children were born in Alsace except the last one which was born at sea. They came on the ship "Probus" in 1844, leaving Antwerp on December 6th 1944 and landed at Galveston in January of 1845. They shuttled from Galveston to Indianola and traveled by ox-cart to San Antonio where they waited until September for the arrival of Castro.

     This group of settlers were led by Rev. Gergory Pfanner, a Catholic priest adventurer. On the same ship were Salome's brother, Francis J. Forst and his wife and two daughters, and her sister, Frances, who later married George Mangold. The Forsts and Mangolds were from Kurtzenhausen, District of Woerth, not far from Lampertsloch. 

     The Christilles family received their grant on the Franciso Perez Creek, southwest of Castroville. Joseph Christilles, the 75 year old father of Pierre, also came along. [handwritten addition: Each male was granted 100 ? of land and one lot in Castroville. This property was granted to settlers by the Republic of Texas.]
